Originally from Central New York, Richard moved to California in early 2020 and quickly fell in love with the state’s diverse landscapes and remarkable flora. Exploring California’s parks and trails sparked a deep curiosity about native plants and the ecosystems they support. That curiosity led him to complete the California Naturalist Program and later the UC Master Gardener Program in Yolo County, where he gained hands-on experience in sustainable gardening and plant care.
The more he worked with plants, the deeper his interest became. He began to understand the importance of using climate-appropriate, low-water, drought-tolerant plants, especially California natives that create a sense of place and support local pollinators. To further his education, he completed the Theodore Payne Foundation’s California Native Plant Landscaper Certification Program.
Richard currently interns with Davis-based, award-winning gardener and native plant expert Patricia Carpenter, assisting with her Native Plant Ramble events. He is also a regular volunteer at the Friends of West Pond native plant community garden and the SacValley CNPS Native Plant Nursery and enjoys lending a hand on community garden projects throughout Sacramento and Davis.
He is always excited to talk plants and help you create a beautiful, sustainable landscape while also taking care of your garden maintenance and pruning needs.
